The plasma bong adds a little visual shock to your hits

We all probably saw and played with plasma orbs when we were kids — that’s the name for those glass globes that had electricity flowing through gases contained inside, creating a cool, and usually manipulable light show. But here’s a thought: How could would that little device be if it was attached to a bong?

The answer: Very cool, and someone figured that out before us, because it’s a real thing that you can buy. We first saw it in this tweet from cannabis twitter, and then went looking for how we could buy and operate a plasma glass bong. This seems like a joke page, where it’s listed for $4999 (too much for poor bloggers like us), but our search led us to Cheech Glass, a company licensed by Cheech Marin himself, that makes all kinds of rad hardware, including bubblers, bongs, and other glass pieces.

Cheech Glass doesn’t appear to be selling a plasma bong at the moment (though they do have a lot of other impressive stuff), but at some point in the past, they have indeed custom-made a plasma bong. Cool! The lady who owns the bong says she got it while managing a headshop, so it was a product at one time, but she doesn’t mention how much it costs. Looking at Cheech Glass’s other pipe, we’d guess around $300, depending on how much the plasma section actually costs. The lady in the video says she doesn’t know what the gasses in the glass or if the bong is science or black magic, and we can answer both of those questions. The gas is probably neon (though it could be argon or xenon, also noble gasses), and the bong is definitely science-based, though it does seem very magical.

What a cool piece — too bad it’s not more available. If you do reach out to Cheech Glass and have them make one for you, send us a picture! Not only would it be super fun to have one of these around during a long bong session, but the science behind them is really neat as well.
