Canada's THC BioMed plans to turn weed into cigarettes (no thanks)
A company called THC BioMed International has announced that it plans to turn cannabis, which is a plant that can open your mind, has a long history of use in ritual and spirituality, and can be used to fight pain and provide relief for other ailments, into… cigarettes. To us, it seems like a huge downgrade, but that’s the plan, according to a Canadian site called The Deep Dive (which we noticed from our friends at Merry Jane). THC BioMed has seen that prerolls are popular, and has announced plans to create packs of them, completely with filters just like tobacco cigarettes, and made completely out of cannabis.
We definitely don’t mean to be gatekeepers here for no reason — certainly there are all sorts of people who can benefit from cannabis, and if they choose to imbibe it in a cigarette form, then by all means, it seems like there will be a product for them. But if the cannabis industry starts using tobacco cigarettes as a target, what are they really aiming for? The beauty of cannabis is that it’s natural — it’s a plant that’s been gardened and cultivated over thousands of years to have a really wonderful and unexpected effect on human biology, and the plan is just to lock it up in machine-crafted cigarettes, using filters that came straight from the tobacco industry?
That’s a hard pass from us. THC BioMed probably will find an audience for its product, and who knows — if someone routinely smokes tobacco, and this is the form that allows cannabis to reach them, maybe their lives will be improved as a result. But cannabis isn’t tobacco, and quite frankly, we hope it never will be. Hopefully there’s lots more opportunity for cannabis and this community, rather than just becoming another version of what tobacco is.
