CACannaBizCon 2019: Five questions with HAL Extraction

CACannaBizCon 2019: Five questions with HAL Extraction

The National Cannabis Industry Association’s annual California Cannabis Business Conference 2019 took place this week in Long Beach, CA, and The Elegant Stoner was in attendance, covering the show as it happened. The show expo featured lots of different businesses involved in the cannabis space, including many that don’t really sell consumer products — they offer help to growing cannabis businesses, or support the industry in other ways. Even though we mostly focus on cool stuff consumers can buy, we still wanted to highlight some of the people and businesses at the show, and so we’re going to be posting a series of quick interviews from around the CACannaBizCon 2019 show floor, asking people at the show what they’re up to, and what they’re thinking about in the cannabis industry.

What's your name, title, and what do you do?

My name is Emma Byrnes [right, above, with the rest of her team], and I'm the sales manager for HAL Extraction. We make prefab C1D1 and C1D2 rooms. So what that is is a prefabricated enclosure to do any sort of extraction using ethanol, butane, propane, any flammable solvents. All of the engineering's been done, so it ships out to the customer in individual components, and they can set it up on site instead of building out an entire facility.

How did you get involved in cannabis?

I got out of college, and was looking for jobs, found something I felt I could do, and here I am two years later. I studied biology! I was interested in the team and the atmosphere that this kind of job afforded me. There's really great work/life balance, and our owner's a really great guy -- he started the company, and it's all about health and safety, so that really resonated with me.

What do you like about the industry?

I find that it's not at all like corporate America. It's great -- people are friendly, it's an easy industry to work in. If I was working at some big corporate company, I don't think I would have that flexibility. For me it's important to both have a career I enjoy and have the balance in my life to do other things that I also enjoy.

What's the biggest obstacle you're facing?

I think for us, just because our product is used across hundreds of jurisdictions, and as more jurisdictions come online, staying up to speed and staying ahead of the curve on all of the rules and regulations and making sure our product's compliant for every customer.

Anything you've seen that's cool lately or that you want to recommend?

I think our product is great! It solves the need for compliance, people don't have to worry about that. It's not the fun part of extraction -- it's to get you up to speed and up to code.
