Rover.com says marijuana-related dog names are up 41%

Here’s a fun story — it turns out that legalization in Colorado has had some extra unintended effects. Rover.com (a site for dog walkers) has posted its annual list of the top dog names in Denver, and while the top names are about as hip as you might expect (Charlie, Max, and Cooper for boys, and Belle, Luna, and Lucy for girls), there’s one other interesting trend. Apparently, marijuana-related dog names are up 41%. The two examples provided are Mary Jane and Doobie, but they leave the rest to your imagination. Stoner? Herb? Flower? We’d be really curious to hear more!

According to the same report, tech inspired dog names are also up, including Emoji and Widget. Widget isn’t too bad, but we’d much rather call a dog Doobie than Emoji. Jokes aside, this is an interesting consequence of legalization — because it’s now legal, cannabis will likely be more and more visible in the culture. Marijuana-related dog names aren’t exactly changing the world, but it will be interesting to see what else changes as the drug becomes more mainstream. Will our media change, or our hobbies change, if a post-dinner treat is a joint instead of a few pints?

Definitely something to think about the next time you take little Toker out for a walk!
