New Gallup poll: Two out of three Americans in favor of legalization
The time has never been more right for legalization in the US, according to a new poll by Gallup. Two thirds of Americans now support legalization, says the new poll, marking the highest percentage ever. Hot on the heels of our neighbor to the north legalizing last week, the poll says that Americans are in favor of making cannabis legal with a supermajority of 66 to 32 percent.
There have also been some big increases in specific demographics, too. 59% of people aged 55 and over are now in favor of legalization, and among Republicans, 53% are in favor. Among Americans aged 18 to 34, there’s a whopping 78% approval for legalization.
In fact, this could be the most unifying issue on this scale. At a time when America seems split in two on almost every concern, legalization is quickly becoming something we can all agree on. And politicians continue to take notice — just this week, Representative Ro Khanna from California called not only for legalization, but also for expunging criminal records for marijuana use on a national level. At this point, legalization isn’t just a likely conclusion to this issue — it’s clearly what the majority of Americans want to happen.
