Vermont Governor to sign legalization bill today
Welcome to the party, Vermont! The governor of that great state has announced that after the legislators placed a bill on his desk legalizing recreational marijuana, he's decided to sign it in private today. Sure, it would be nice to have a full signing ceremony, but even without that fanfare, it's great news that Vermont has decided to join the eight other states that have also allowed recreational cannabis.
We're at an interesting point in our history right now, where states are speaking out for the will of the people (the overwhelming majority of which support legal cannabis), and the federal government has yet to do so. Of course, some would say there are more important things going on in the federal government right now (including a shutdown motivated by the Republicans' inability to take a reasonable stance on helping sick children or hardworking immigrants), but there are multiple bills on the table in Congress. Perhaps, despite all of the chaos, at the end of the year we'll see the laws of the United States align a little more closely to what American citizens actually want to happen.
