Strain Gauge: LSD
Strain Gauge is The Elegant Stoner’s ongoing strain taste test feature. For every cannabis strain that comes across our desk, we’ll check it out, give it the sniff test, try a high, and then provide a verdict (between Poor, Fine, Great, or Amazing). If you want THC percentages, crossbreed information, or terpene counts, you’ll have to look elsewhere. We're not interested in testing in a lab. The goal here is to let you know what a certain strain looks, smells, and feels like, and whether it’s worth asking for by name the next time you're at the dispensary.
Origin: This gram of LSD was a bonus as a first-time patient at a local delivery service, so expectations weren't high. I specifically requested a sativa, and the budtender recommended this strain, either because it fit the bill as a sativa, or because it was the last of their stock and they wanted to clear out inventory. Either way, as a free gram, we were happy to take it and give it a shot.
The Look: The nugs we got were a real light green with plenty of shiny specks on it, again matching about what you'd expect from a sativa. The nugs themselves were relatively small and tight, but again because this was a bonus gram, there wasn't much complaining to do. The sample was also a little dryer than you might expect, which didn't inspire a ton of confidence, but did make the bud easier to grind up into little pieces.
The Sniff Test: The smell wasn't super pungent -- it's a light earthy smell, with just a hint of citrus. Taking a big sniff reminded us of looking down a dark train tunnel in the summer, so make of that what you will. The smell wasn't overwhelming at all -- it was a bit understated and pleasant. Again, the nugs might have been a little drier than you'd usually want, which might have resulted in a little less power behind the smell, but the overall impression was of a tasty strain hitting below its weight on this specific instance. Let's give it a shot!
The High: The strain's namesake makes you think that it will be pretty psychadelic, and right out of the gate, LSD hits you with a (not surprisingly) heady high. The strain isn't nearly as hallucinogenic as its namesake (unless you really go to town on it), but along with the general euphoria and heady buzz, we did spot a few quick movements and stars right outside our vision. There wasn't anything too alarming (though again, if you're overly anxious and take too much, you could be in trouble here).
In general, the high gives you the sense there's magic in the air, and that you can take on the world no matter what. There's plenty of nice euphoria, and partly through the high at home, we decided to do some cleaning around the kitchen (and search for some munchies at the same time).
The Verdict: Fine. LSD does exactly what you'd imagine: Provides a nice, heady high with plenty of creativity and activity to boot. This is a very solid sativa that pokes a little bit out of simple euphoria with some great motivation and a rosy look at the world
If you're prone to anxiety, you might hit some of the wrong notes here, especially if you overuse it. At the same time, though, the worst that could happen is that you get some chores done. If you're in the mood for a heady high, or want to really get into the structure of some psychedelic music without actually dropping a tab, LSD is perfect for that. If sativa is your thing, this is well worth a try, but make sure you've got something creative lined up to do or you'll end up bouncing around the room and then eating a whole bag of chips.
If you have a strain you want us to test out (whether it's something you grew yourself or a strain you're just a fan of), hit us up on the contact line and we'll give it a look.
