What's Good on Weed This Weekend: Downsizing, Bright, and more
The weekend is finally here, and for most of you in the US at least, it's probably at least a three-day weekend with Christmas, if not the start of a full weeklong holiday break. While some folks might be headed home to the family (and thus away from places to light up), others are plenty excited to get their cannabis on. And just like every weekend, here's some recommendations for what to do and what to see while enjoying the green.
In theaters, there's a whole bunch of fun stuff to see. The Greatest Showman is a musical featuring Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, about the life and times of circusmaster PT Barnum. Jumanji is hitting theaters as well, updating the Robin Williams classic with The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and the lovely Karen Gillan for a new generation. Pitch Perfect 3 is also out, and while the reviews on it aren't great, odds are good that if you're in the mood for a Pitch Perfect movie, you aren't too worried about what the reviews are like anyway. Hearing the dulcet tones of the Bellas is probably a great match with your favorite strain.
Our pick, however, is the new Alexander Payne movie Downsizing. The reviews also haven't been excellent on this one, but the visuals in the movie have to be seen to be believed, and especially with a nice sativa, there's a lot of brain food here to pick through. As long as you go in with low expectations, you should have a great time watching Matt Damon trying to deal with how to size his life correctly.
On Netflix, there's plenty of good stuff to watch (including the Errol Morris documentary Wormwood, about the CIA and LSD), but we're recommending Bright, the new movie starring Will Smith and directed by Suicide Squad's David Ayer. Again, keep your expectations low, because reviews have been pretty poor, but it should be wild to see a Los Angeles on screen that's partially been taken over by fairies and mythological creatures. Ham-handed racial metaphors aside, the special effects should be exciting, and what more do you need than to see Will Smith arrest magical elves, right? Bring out the bong this weekend and laugh with some friends about how bad Bright actually is.
In gaming, there are plenty of great best of 2017 lists around, so while there aren't many big releases at the end of the year, now would be a great time to see what you've missed and catch up on that. In house at ES, we're playing Middle-Earth: Shadow of War and Stardew Valley on the Switch (it's so much fun to get high and water plants), but feel free to play whatever floats your boat, of course.
Above all, have a very safe and happy holiday! We'll probably be taking a break here on Monday for Christmas, but we'll be back soon and we're still aiming for an official launch in January. Happy holidays, safe travels, and stay elegant!
