Elegant Stoner of the Week: Carl Sagan
Every Wednesday, we choose one weed user throughout history to spotlight as our Elegant Stoner of the Week, someone who embodies what it means to use marijuana responsibly and enjoy it with grace and class. This week, we're spotlighting astronomer and TV host Carl Sagan, best known for hosting the 80s science TV series Cosmos, and both for doing early research on extraterrestrial micro biologic life and for creating two of the first physical messages sent into space, the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record.
Think about that for just one second: This man was tasked (along with others) to create a message to be blasted off into space, and to design it so that any one (or anything) that came along could "read" it and receive information about humanity and where it is and what we're all about. You have to expand your mind to even conceive of something like that, and while Sagan kept his marijuana use secret for most of his life, he was an avid user and supporter. Using a pseudonym of "Mr. X," he wrote an article called Marijuana Reconsidered that describes exactly how weed can be used to gain insight, be more creative, and expand your mind and perceptions. "Cannabis enables nonmusicians to know a little about what it is like to be a musician, and nonartists to grasp the joys of art," he wrote.
"I am convinced," the essay also reads, "that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, unavailable to us without such drugs." This is a brilliant and successful man, who not only saw huge benefits in using cannabis responsibly, but who saw that our society and educational system were failing us in not finding ways to make use of the drug's benefits.
For that reason, and for many more (you can just get lost in watching him in clips on YouTube these days), Carl Sagan is our Elegant Stoner of the Week. This smart, brilliant man found a responsible way to use this incredible substance, and we appreciate him for that and all of his other accomplishments.
