Lifted Licks: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's "Polygondwanaland"
Every Thursday here at ES, we'll be recommending the best music of the week to get stoned to. One of the most fun things to do while you're high is to set up a nice stereo or headphones, put on some great music, and just get lost in the notes and the lyrics, and each week's album recommendation will help you do just that. We'll find the best music to get stoned to, and let you know about it here!
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, an Australian psychedelic rock band, is trying to do something crazy in 2017: Make and release five albums. They've made it to four so far, and while the first three, according to reviewers, were interesting, the fourth is something special. "Polygondwanaland" is impressive right out of the gate: The album starts with a 11 minute long multi-stage kickoff called Crumbling Castle, and just takes off from there. The music is full of little nooks and crannies, little repeated rhythms and echoed notes that go deeper and deeper into lots of little psychedelic grooves. There's also sorts of cool instrumentation too, from flutes to the wild stylings of the band's two drummers.
Basically, you have to get high and listen to this -- it's quite an experience. Polygondwanaland is available as a free download -- free! -- over on the band's Bandcamp page (it's also on Spotify and other platforms if that's more your speed). Go light up your strain of choice and definitely be sure to take this journey soon. Enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend!
